I first visited Unity Diner before they moved to Aldgate East. Being so close to the office, it was hard to resist returning. From cauliflower wings to seitan steaks served with gravy, you can be sure that you will want to try everything on their menu. I almost forgot to mention, it’s 100% vegan and all of their profits go to animal rights campaigning.
Now based in Aldgate East, you’ll still find the same dishes and ambience but with a much bigger seating area.
I love these tasty, lightly battered prawnz. Made from yuca, they have a similar spongey texture but taste very different to prawns. For £6.50 the price is quite steep as you only get three skewers but definitely worth a try.
Loaded Mac & Cheeze
This was definitely a comfort-food dish. Made with pasta and a creamy cheese sauce, I just wished the portion had been bigger for £8. I did enjoy the crunchy texture from the panko breadcrumbs on top.
I’d definitely recommend the Dirty Loaded Fries. These chunky fries are loaded with 3 vegan cheeses, seitan pieces smothered in UD BBQ sauce, aioli, ,jalapeño sauce and topped with herbs and crispy onions. Even though it is portioned for 2 people, I really don’t want to share them!
Burgers vs Hot Dogs
If you’re having trouble deciding between the two, I have tried both! So hopefully my review below will help you to choose!
I can’t lie, I am a sucker for hash browns so that is what made me select this burger over the other two options. The VFC burger has a crispy southern fried UD chikken patty topped with melted cheese, bakon, caramelised onions and a hash brown. My friend enjoyed the burger but I found it a bit dry and the patty was quite tough. I would have liked some sauce with it.
Surf ‘n’ Turf Dog
I have never had surf and turf before due to my allergies so I was really curious to see what this would be like. I was very surprised by the portion size as it was bigger than my face! Made with Moving Mountains’ hot dog, the appearance looks identical to a frankfurter. However the texture is more solid and has too much ‘bite’ for me. As mentioned above, I loved the tempura prawnz on top.
I would choose the hot dog over the burger just because of the tempura prawnz but if you can, try both!
I am still yet to try their famous chocolate salted caramel cake but I would definitely recommend Unity Diner if you’re looking for an intimate catch up or date.
